Gothamist reminds us that NYC libraries are facing pretty steep cuts by providing a nice little library slideshow.
It is a sobering time for public libraries. I have to imagine that there need to be more than 24 hour read-ins and cute Ghostbuster videos to save them. I’m not sure public libraries as they exist right now can make it out of this recession without some real big changes. I think it is time to really look at the mission of the public library and consider some large-scale, potentially unpopular changes that need to be made in order to accomplish that mission today.
I won’t unleash my future of the library rant just now, but with stories like this coming out all the time, it is bound to come out sooner or later.
